Alcohol is also served at the event.

The altercation stemmed from a reading that advocated a new branch of the existing Church of the Pancake and that was more “fundamentalist and orthodox” called Church of the Bran Flake.

According to several attendees, including some in police custody, the Church of the Bran Flake would’ve been very similar to the Church of the Bran Flake, but start earlier, have healthier brunch options, take place in the front yard of the property, and have a port-a-potty for an additional bathroom that other churches in the yard couldn’t use.

After the mock service, the reading lead to several ideas for other spin-off churches, including The Church of Your Gross Face, The Church of Maybe You Should Lose Some Weight and Not Eat As Many Pancakes, and ultimately a few attendees who began assaulting other event-goers while yelling “Church of the Hurtz Donut”.

“The previous two events were not problems, just fine,” said Clint Stockwell, who owns the house next door the property where the incident took place. “But I started hearing a lot of loud shouting, and looked out the window, and there was fighting and glasses and plates being thrown all around the back yard.”

Alejandra Pelinka, Director of NEMAA, the organization that coordinates Art-a-Whirl events, commented on the incident by saying, “While we encourage Northeast residents to make the weekend as creative and enjoyable as possible, we don’t think that type of behavior captures the spirit of Art-a-Whirl and is really unfortunate.”

The woman who owns the property where the fracas occurred declined to be named, but when interviewed said, “I’m from Milwaukee, so I guess I didn’t think a few drunk guys fighting after a church service is all that weird.”

My first reading at The Church of the Pancake

The following is a reading from the Not-Really-Sacred Book of the Church of the Bran Flake

It was on the third and final day of Art-a-Whirl that the congregation assembledunder tents in Sister Claudia’s backyard to celebrate as the Church of the Pancake.

It was at this service that the not-really-sacred decrees which established our newer, truer fake church, The Church of the Bran Flake, were delivered.

The following are the Not-Really-All-the-Sacred foundational decrees of the Church of the Bran Flake:

Decree, the First:

The Church of the Bran Flake will take place at 11:00 a.m on the Sunday of Art-a-Whirl.

Decree, the Second:

The Church of the Bran Flake will take place in Claudia’s *front* yard, not the back where The Church of the Pancake presides.

Decree, the Third:

The Church of the Bran Flake will feature a breakfast buffet of mostly cereals, but will also include toppings like fruit, possibly different types of sugar.

Decree, the Fourth:

Drinking is allowed at Church of the Bran Flake.

Decree, the Fifth:

Pancakes are allowed at the Church of Bran Flake, but they must be whole or buckwheat, which sounds a little too strict, but the Church of the Bran Flake also recognizes the legitimacy of Waffles, which have previously been shunned by the Church of the Pancake, and which will also be available in whole or buckwheat form.

Decree, the Sixth:

Sausage is also allowed at the Church of the Bran Flake, but not so much that the service turneth into a party of only sausage, which shall be deemed unholy.

The Seventh and Final Not-Really-Holy Decree:

No other sects of the Church of the Bran Flake shall be recognized as legimate fake churches.

It was upon these guidelines that the Church of the Bran Flake was established.

Blessed be breakfast.

RIP Switchblade Comb

RIP Switchblade Comb:
god speed you beautiful bastard of a blog

fuckyeahdementia:

Or not coincidentally.

Rep. Morrie Lanning R-Moorhead, sponsor of the stadium bill, called Clark’s amendment “not germane” and “another attempt to spend money we don’t have.”

But there’s also a war on the..."

“
We’ve been hearing a lot about the war on women, which is real enough. But there’s also a war on the young, which is just as real even if it’s better disguised. And it’s doing immense harm, not just to the young, but to the nation’s future.

Let’s start with some advice Mitt Romney gave to college students during an appearance last week. After denouncing President Obama’s “divisiveness,” the candidate told his audience, “Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.”

The first thing you notice here is, of course, the Romney touch — the distinctive lack of empathy for those who weren’t born into affluent families, who can’t rely on the Bank of Mom and Dad to finance their ambitions. But the rest of the remark is just as bad in its own way.

I mean, “get the education”? And pay for it how? Tuition at public colleges and universities has soared, in part thanks to sharp reductions in state aid. Mr. Romney isn’t proposing anything that would fix that; he is, however, a strong supporter of the Ryan budget plan, which would drastically cut federal student aid, causing roughly a million students to lose their Pell grants.

So how, exactly, are young people from cash-strapped families supposed to “get the education”? Back in March Mr. Romney had the answer: Find the college “that has a little lower price where you can get a good education.” Good luck with that. But I guess it’s divisive to point out that Mr. Romney’s prescriptions are useless for Americans who weren’t born with his advantages.

… What should we do to help America’s young? Basically, the opposite of what Mr. Romney and his friends want. We should be expanding student aid, not slashing it. And we should reverse the de facto austerity policies that are holding back the U.S. economy — the unprecedented cutbacks at the state and local level, which have been hitting education especially hard.

Yes, such a policy reversal would cost money. But refusing to spend that money is foolish and shortsighted even in purely fiscal terms. Remember, the young aren’t just America’s future; they’re the future of the tax base, too.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste; wasting the minds of a whole generation is even more terrible. Let’s stop doing it.
”

-
Paul Krugman, The New York Times, “Wasting Our Minds.”

Our “white people problems” problem: Why it’s time to stop using “white” as a pejorative

Our man in Arkansas, Noel Murray, wrote an excellent piece on what people actually mean when they say something is “too white.” If you’re interested in how we talk about race and what it means for our popular culture, it’s an excellent read.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this.

First off, I’m a big stickler for diversity of TV, almost to the point that certain friends and family members don’t even want to approach the subject with me anymore. I just recently got in an online argument defending why I hoped “Scandal” would succeed even if it ended up not being very good (and it’s pretty decent, to be honest, and Kerry Washington is hitting it out of the park in each and every scene) because I hope that having a black female lead in a mainstream network show will let executives know that it’s possible for a show like that to have cross-appeal.

I don’t want to launch into another defense of “Girls” because there have been a ton of them already, but I think it’s rather telling that this article (which by all accounts is rather silly) is coming from The A.V. Club because one look at the comment section for an episode of the show reveals something incredibly annoying that I haven’t been able to put my finger on yet.

A lot of people are genuinely mad that the show features a very white New York City and while I absolutely understand that concern, I don’t think the blame and anger should be squarely directed at Lena Dunham. “Girls” reflects her world and I don’t find it surprising that it’s so insular, especially when so much of it seems to be a satire on the sheltered lives of upper-middle class white dynasties in the first place. They could easily add a black character or two, but I’d rather allow “Girls” to do what it wants to do and do it well and instead see networks take the chance and foster more creative talent from different communities without fearing that a show with a predominately black cast will be labeled by white audiences as something that’s “not for them.” Part of the reason why I hate Tyler Perry is that I feel he’s tried to monopolize the black film and television industry and he’s absolutely shitty at it. TV’s white problem won’t go away if Dunham adds a black co-worker that she clubs with. The major inroads will come when the actual content creators come from different walks of life and not just the actors. “Girls” has a reason to exist and I won’t fault it. I just want to see a show like it that tackles something like the experience of young black females that’s actually written by young black females.

The reason I think Murray wrote this is because the majority of negative “Girls” comments on the A.V. Club seem to be using the race issue as an excuse to rag on the show for what seem like entirely different reasons. I recognize some of these commenters and I don’t believe for one second that most of them really care about race divisions in TV. There’s so much anger being directed at Dunham that I can’t help but feel that it’s coming from a much uglier misogynist place with race used solely as a justification to tear her down. I can’t prove this, but the fact that she’s getting so much shit for her white NY after 2 episodes from what is almost entirely white men, whereas something like How I Met Your Mother gets none after 6 seasons of the stuff, smacks of sexism to me. I legitimately don’t think half of these people really want to watch shows about black people (or Asians, or Latinos, etc). They just want to insult Dunham.

So basically, this is a good article for white people talking to other white people about race on TV. Outside of that it’s pretty goofy, but not entirely without merit. I just don’t appreciate this segment (and again, it’s just a segment) of people using something important like race to covertly attack a woman that’s making them uncomfortable for being frank about female sexuality and doing it while not looking like a model. As for the whole “daughters of the elite” argument….I assume you’re saying the same thing to other actresses on TV like Anjelica Huston? What about Martha Plimpton?

All of this is worth reading, especially the AV Club piece which points out the challenges of ‘comfortable white folks picking on other comfortable white folks’.

newsweek:

To put it another way, there are more cities that want teams than there are teams for cities. Government leaders who either want to gain popularity by acquiring a franchise or are afraid of losing public support because a team abandons their community will make extremely accommodating financial offers, in the form of stadium subsidies, to coax million-dollar sports organizations to either remain in or move to their areas.”

-
~ from the 1982 book, “Uncovering the Dome”, about the politics that went into building the Metrodome, written by one *AMY KLOBUCHAR*

As long as the Legislature is in session, the chance to do the right thing remains. A new Vikings stadium should be authorized this year.

For that to happen, the bill will need more forceful support from legislative leaders than it has garnered to date.
”

-
From today’s, which is *another*, STrib editorial in support of the current Vikings stadium bill in the legislature.

For fuck’s sake.

This is a very, very clear point to be made again and again and again: it would unfathomable for a legitimate newspaper editorial board to support this terribly, terribly bad plan—one which bucks the Mpls. city charter, one which would be a net financial loss at all levels of government, one that has clearly gotten this far through sheer force of political manipulations—but these kinds of editorial positions show that, no, the STrib front office isn’t trying to make ca$h off the deal, but rather the folks managing the editorial board, as with other higher up positions at the paper, are clearly so far out of touch (with the market, with a journalistic mission) that they can’t even make remotely sensible calls on this basic issue.

Must be the bad economy that’s making that happen.

newsweek:

Here’s this week’s cover, on newsstands and the iPad tomorrow morning. And the summary of the corresponding story:

In an age where women are dominating - in the workplace, at school, at home - why are they seeking to be dominated in their love lives? Recent media portrayals have shown that a rising number of modern women fantasize about being overpowered, while studies are turning out statistics that bewilder feminists. New shows like HBO’s Girls and books like Fifty Shades of Grey are showcasing the often hidden desire for powerlessness. But why? Katie Roiphe examines the submissive yet empowered female in Newsweek. “It is perhaps inconvenient for feminism that the erotic imagination does not submit to politics, or even changing demographics,” she writes.

We haven’t seen the cover story yet, but color us intrigued! Let’s hear your pre-thoughts, tumblr.

is there a word for something that’s both ridiculous but also insane?

monilandia:
