Minneapolis: notes from the feild
Oh, right, Minneapolis is wonderful in the summer.
Was this most recent winter particularly harsh? Or long? Or one more winter too many? Either way, spring sprouted a few weeks ago and summer’s now in full bloom. And it fucking rules to be outside.
If you’re looking for an album to play at your BBQs, try the new record from Little Joy. Before some of the songs assuredly end up in a Target or beer commercial, it’s a lovely little album—light, melodic, dreamy, catchy. (Also, if there’s beer at your BBQ, invite me over.)
Recently I’ve had a few conversations about gardening, which is a new and exciting topic for Generation X’. (Just as truffle oil is the new bacon, gardening is the new knitting.) Here’s the gist of these ‘did you know about gardening’ conversations: you can just grow your own food—food that’s actually good for you. By yourself. And it regenerates from the sun. And that’s crazy. Such a perspective really says a lot about our upbringings on the peripheries in-between midwest farming and sub/urban big box developments.
Maybe that’s why our new (greener? sustainable? realistic?) hybrid communities are so exciting. Do you know that in the next few years you’ll be able to take a train and then walk to almost anywhere in Minneapolis, not just to the Metrodome or to the Airport? It will be just like a big city, but better!
Also, are you excited for some of your friends to go into small-scale farming? I am; I’ve already starting making stickers that look just like a ‘I <3 My Cub’ stickers, but instead they say ‘I <3 Chuck the Farmer who pretty much supplies me with all of my food’.
It sounds like France, from what I’ve heard about France. But whatever, it’s exciting.
Getting off of work, biking to your firends’ house, sitting outside, drinking beerz, pulling up Little Joy on the stereo with your iphone, enjoying the weather—it’s going to be amazing. If we can just get the Cities to include Claritin in the water supply to deal with my allergies, it’s almost Utopic.
Until winter comes back, that is. But that’s not for another six months.
